Question 974:
The Union
victory at Vicksburg in 1863 was particularly significant because it
(A) ended the war
(B) gave the Union complete
control of the Atlantic seaboard
(C) gave the Union control over
the entire Mississippi River
(D) opened the way to take control
of Richmond
(E) provided Pres. Lincoln with
the victory he desired before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation
Answer:
(C) gave the Union control over
the entire Mississippi River
Explanation:
Control
of the Mississippi River was one of the original goals of the Anaconda
Plan, the Union strategy at the start of the war. While New Orleans was
controlled in 1861, Vicksburg, Mississippi proved to be difficult to
capture. After a nine-month siege, Gen. Grant's forces were able to
subdue the defending forces in July 1863. This gave the Union control
of the length of the river.
