Question 950:

The main reason that Congress passed neutrality acts in 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1939 was because of

    (A)  President Roosevelt's deeply held view on the value of neutrality
    (B)  pro-Nazi Germany sentiment in the U.S.
    (C)  a strong isolationist perspective by many Americans
    (D)  confidence in the League of Nations in the U.S.
    (E)  fear of Japanese aggression in the Pacific

Answer:
    (C)  a strong isolationist perspective by many Americans

Explanation:

Until the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, isolationist sentiment ran very strong throughout both Congress and the United States. The Nye Committee hearings in the 1930s exposed the profiteering that occcured before and after our entry into World War I  and upset Americans, who were reluctant to join another European fight. The America First Committee, which urged that the U.S. maintain an attitude of strict neutrality, staged rallies with celebrities such as Charles Lindbergh and gathered support, opposing Roosevelt's Lend-Lease Act to assist the Allies.
