Question 901:

President Nixon resigned the presidency in 1974 as a result of

    (A)   an impeachment conviction in the U.S. Senate
    (B)   Vice-President Ford's promise of a presidential pardon if Nixon stepped down
    (C)   Republican leaders informing him that a Senate trial would result in his conviction
    (D)   the Supreme Court requiring him to relinquish the position in the U.S. v. Richard Nixon decision
    (E)   the discovery of the White House taping system

Answer:

    (C)   Republican leaders informing him that a Senate trial would result in his conviction

Explanation:

President Nixon had vowed to fight impeachment proceedings. With the release of taped conversations of meetings with his top aides immediately following the Watergate breakin, his support dropped among Republicans in Congress. On August 7,  1974 Nixon met with a Republican delegation who informed him the chances were "gloomy" of avoiding a trial and conviction. The next day he announced his resignation.
