Question 1111:

The Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery accomplished all but which of the following?

    (A) reaching the Pacific Ocean
    (B) finding the headwaters of the Missouri River
    (C) making peaceful contact with a large number of Indian tribes

    (D) gathering a large amount of plant and animal specimens
    (E) bringing wealth and future success to both Meriwether Lewis and William Clark

Answer:
   (E) bringing wealth and future success to both Meriwether Lewis and William Clark

Explanation:
Lewis was plagued by mental instability and depression. Though appointed governor of the Louisiana Territory, he was criticized for his administration and in 1809 while on his way to Washington, D.C. to answer charges, was found dead, most likely by his own hand, at an inn in Tennessee. Clark had a more successful career following the voyage. He was appointed governor of Missouri and lived until 1838.
