suspended tariffs throughout the U.S.

declared the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 to be unconstitutional and "null
and void"

in a famous toast, said "Our federal Union—it must and shall be
preserved."

Calhoun resigned from the U.S. Senate and ran for vice-president so
