While Lewis & Clark received fame and experienced tremendous success in their exploration of the American Northwest, this explorer who mapped much of the southern section of the Louisiana Purchase was much less noteworthy in his adventures, was captured by Spanish soldiers and eventually released in 1807, and may have given the nickname "The Great American Desert" to the American Southwest.
